Great question, Tiferet. I've done a bit of digging and it would appear that there's no formal way for states to report on how much land is actually used for landfills, although there is a count of the number of active municipal sites: 3581 (in 1996)! You can get more information (including some about industrial waste sites) here: http://www.epa.gov/epawaste/nonhaz/municipal/landfill/sw_pubs.htm#reports.

flowergirl,

I'd say show them the hard facts! We've got a TON of information on greening your office here: http://www.greenyour.com/office, including many resources that should make it a snap to show your building manager the financial benefits of going green.

Just ran across this new eco-paint option: http://www.auro.co.uk/.

I've got a whole load of reusable bags that I take to the grocery store on a regular basis. They're so much better than flimsy plastic bags that break easily and hurt your hands under heavy loads. I used to forget them, but now I've got a system: As soon as I empty the bags at home, I bundle them together and hang them on the back door. The next time I'm on my way out, I take them with me and put them in the trunk of my car.

I've been struggling with fruit flies in my house. A nontoxic solution that seems to be working is a container with a apple cider vinegar-water mix and a piece of fruit, covered with a hole-y lid. Every couple of hours, the container will fill with live flies. Put a piece of tape over the holes, take the container outside, and let the flies go free. Continue this for about a week, being sure to change and dispose of the piece of fruit daily (outside of your home). Soon enough, they'll all be gone.

I'm really liking these new powered toothbrushes. I was worried that the replaceable heads weren't recyclable, but a quick email to their customer service dept confirmed that they are.

I've really been enjoying the LUSH solid shampoos and they're especially good for travel since they won't explode on the plane! And if you purchase the conbination shampoo/conditioner bar, you'll only need one, which saves space (and subsequently, fuel), too.

I wanted to be able to refill my produce spritzer with a homemade veggie and fruit wash, and found this recipe that seems to work well: http://www.care2.com/greenliving/how-to-clean-your-vegetables.html.

It's great to see one company still making replacement-head toothbrushes (at least one of the big dental products companies used to, but no more!), but what I'd really enjoy is a replacement-head brush that's made of recycled plastic, too.

I've got a vermicompost bin at home (I'm a condo-dweller) and absolutely love it! It gets bonus points for keeping my garbage free of drips and smells. A good book to get you started is "Worms Eat My Garbage" which is available from the author, Mary Applehof: http://www.wormwoman.com/acatalog/Wormwoman_catalog_Worms_Eat_My_Garbage_3.html.
