The GreenYour Blog
Take the 2009 GreenYour New Years pledge
We’ll start you off with 9 green new years resolutions - because living a life without regard to the Earth was so last decade.
I resolve to…
1. Give second lives a chance. I will only use paper towels, tissue, toilet paper and office paper made from post-consumer recycled content.
2. Go veggie on Wednesdays (or whatever day of the week you choose). For the 52 Wednesday’s of 2009 I will forgo meat and stick to veggie options (saving me money and saving the planet large amounts of greenhouse gases emitted from the raising of livestock.)
3. Learn to love local. Each month I resolve to learn what foods are in season and look for them at my local farmers market.
4. Recycle recyclables. I will finally learn what is and isn’t recycleable in my town and put everything that can be recycled into a recycling bin-always! (This includes the times I’m on the street and are tempted to throw my newspaper into the corner garbage.)
5. Boycott water bottles for a month. Instead, I will carry my re-usable bottle with me at all times knowing that short term actions soon become habits.
6. Fill the car up (with bags). I will put a big stack of re-useable bags in the car for grocery shopping (and be sure to replenish them weekly.)
7. Add variety to my mobility. Once a week I’ll take an alternative form of transportation (i.e. carpool if I drive, subway if I take cabs, walk or bike if I take the subway)
8. Get informed & get involved. I’ll find out what environmental issue are being debated in my community and write a letter to my council person to give my opinion.
9. Lead by example. Whether its doing a little or doing a lot, the best way to affect change is to let others see me doing it.

Re: Lead by example
It is amazing how receptive kids are; it seems as if my kids were born with knowing to ask "Mom is this recycling or trash?" Kids growing up in the so-called green age are also growing up in the information age. They are hearing more about environmental problems and solutions. www.kidskonserve.com offers information and waste-free food lunch products for kids/families, and Awareness Programs and Zero Waste Challenges for schools. This is how we are reducing lunchtime trash. Just one way we are Greening our New Years.

If you have a website or blog that is self hosted, consider switching over to a host that runs their servers on solar, wind or a combination of the 2. What better way to show your readers about your commitment to make this Earth a better place. Lead by example.
My site is hosted on asio.net which uses solar power. I could not be happier with their service and environmental commitment.

Paper towel has a horrible environmental impact. We fill our landfills with over 2.5 million tons every year! You can not recycle used paper towel in normal channels. This is organic matter that will biodegrade anaerobically over many years and release methane that is 22 times more powerful greenhouse gas than c02. I use skoy cloths in the kitchen and bathroom and we love them. Give them a try!
