The National River Cleanup™ is a year-long event that kicks off May 31st - June 8th. Since this annual event began in 1991 more than 600,000 volunteers have participated in thousands of cleanups nationwide. 2007 was their biggest year with 95,000 volunteers in all 50 states plus Washington, DC removing 600 tons of trash from 7,453 miles of river.

Bureau of Land Management (BLM)

Tremendous volunteer work is done every year on the 258 million acres of BLM public lands. In 2006, volunteers put in more than 1.3 million hours; the equivalent to the efforts of more than 700 full-time agency employees. Green House Network

This unusual volunteer opportunity is a national network of volunteer speakers in more than 33 states available to speak gratis about global warming pollution and climate change policy. These 250 people have given nearly 1,000 talks on college campuses, talk radio, at businesses, community centers, congregations, and retirement communities, reaching more than 20,000 people. Some of the speakers are climate experts but most are "educated citizens."

National Audubon Society

Find the local chapters or state offices nearest you and look into their volunteer possiblities. Audubon also runs The Puffin Project during the summer on seven sanctuaries in the Gulf of Maine which uses 30 volunteers.

National Park Service

Nature Conservancy

US Fish & Wildlife Service

The jobs these 38,000 volunteers take on include banding birds at a national wildlife refuge, raising fish at a national fish hatchery, conducting wildlife surveys, giving a tour, or working to restore delicate habitat.

EcoNow Events (Calfornia)

EcoNow Events are educational, interactive networking seminars aimed at connecting you with sustainable business leaders. EcoTuesday (various US cities)

Chef's Collaborative

Chef's Collaborative Local Food Search allows site users to search for member restaurants serving sustainable cuisine in their area. Member restaurants serve seasonal, local, and environmentally friendly foods, including only food items that have been sustainably grown or fished. Members also buy foods that are grown in accordance with diversity preservation and traditional practices. The organization has more than 1,000 members nationwide.

Eat Well Guide

The Eat Well Guide offers a free online directory of almost 9,000 farms, restaurants, stores, bed & breakfasts, and other outlets that offer sustainably farmed meat, poultry, and dairy products as well as flower products in the US and Canada. Enter your zip code or use the advanced search feature to look for antibiotic- and hormone-free animal products, as well as those raised via sustainable production methods, including organic, pasture-raised, and heritage.

FoodRoutes.org

The FoodRoutes Network sponsors Buy Fresh Buy Local chapters throughout the country. These chapters find ways to connect consumers to local food vendors via outreach education, community events, festivals, and farmers markets.
