It may be the heart of your home, but your kitchen is also a prime energy and water drain, not to mention a storehouse for a slew of earth-unfriendly chemicals and cleaners.

On the energy front, your refrigerator devours about 14 percent of your home's electricity, more than any other kitchen or cleaning appliance.[1] Your stove—no matter what type you have—is also an energy hog. It's estimated that each US household harbors 63 synthetic chemical products, adding up to roughly 10 gallons of earth- and health-harming cleaners and pesticides.[3] As a result, the air inside your home may be two to five times more polluted than the outside air.[4]
