Dual flush toilets and retrofit kits that can be installed on almost any toilet do a lot to boost water conservation, for homes and businesses alike. The system allows you to flush with less water for liquid loads and more water for those that might need a little extra push.

Find it! Dual flush systems

The options for getting a dual flush system in your bathroom are twofold: either with a retrofit kit for your existing toilet (great options for renters), or a brand new fixture altogether. Most major toilet manufacturers carry at least one dual flush model, and home improvement stores across the county are making them a staple in their product line.

If you want a sure-fire way to know which toilet will perform the best for your purposes, consult the Maximum Performance (MaP) Testing Report which reviews 720 different toilet models.

Before you buy

Retrofit kit companies stipulate what characteristics your toilet must have in order to be compatible with the dual flush kit. Check to make sure that your model meets these guidelines before you place an order.

Installing a dual flush system helps you go green because...

  • It conserves water.
  • It conserves energy.

Studies show that those who replace old toilets with dual flush systems save an average of more than 17,000 gallons of water per year, compared to a standard, non-water conserving toilet. High-efficiency toilet savings, on the other hand, top out at 14,000 gallons annually.[1]

The benefits of dual flush toilets are well documented; recently the California Urban Water Conservation Council (CUWCC) published a summary of these studies from around the world. The studies show that there is no significant increase in flushing frequency due to the installation of a dual flush model. By discriminating between liquid and solid loads, these systems were found to use 23-32 percent less water than high-efficiency toilets, which use 1.6 gallons for every flush.
